Just found this article
about Willy Bach
with Sqn 1966-67
Willy Bach (1946-2017)
We have just received news from his partner, Rowan Eisner, that Willy Bach, a recent MPhil student in History in HPI, has passed away in the UK after a long illness.
Willy was well-known and much-liked around the School during his candidature here. He had just passed his examination for his MPhil thesis and was awarded his degree late last year.
The story of Willy’s MPhil actually began in Southeast Asia half a century ago. In 1966 Willy served in the British army as a sapper and was posted to northeast Thailand where he worked on the construction of an airfield. At the time he was told that it was to help in the development of the northeast, the poorest part of the country. Only later did he find out that the real purpose of the airfield was to assist in the secret bombing of Laos, an operation coordinated by the CIA. Between 1964 and 1973 US forces dropped over 2 million tons of bombs on Laos, making it the most heavily-bombed country in history per capita. An estimated 80 million (sic) unexploded bombs remained in Laos at the end of the war, which even today continue to kill and maim people, many of them children.
Using declassified archival documents Willy’s MPhil thesis investigated the collaboration of British, Australian, and New Zealand forces in the CIA’s secret war in Laos.
Willy hoped that in some way his thesis could help compensate for his involvement in this complicated and devastating war. Parts of the thesis have recently been published on the Australian history website, Honest History <http://honesthistory.net.au/…/britain-australia-new-zealan…/> and Willy was preparing to publish the thesis as a book when he passed away.
Willy was a larger-than-life person. He was warm, friendly, courteous, funny, sensitive, and generous. He was a keen cyclist, and would often cycle in from West End to UQ for meetings about his thesis. He had a healthy cynicism about politics and politicians, particularly when it came to waging war. He had a long history of supporting human rights causes and had worked in this field in Africa and Central America. He was a member of numerous anti-war organizations including Veterans for Peace, the Campaign Against Arms Trade, and the Campaign for an Iraq War Inquiry.
Willy was also an accomplished and widely-published poet. His poetry gave him the opportunity to express the passion and emotion that is necessarily muted in academic writing. His themes tended to be on war, conflict, and human rights issues in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. A number of poems written about the time he worked on the airfield in northeast Thailand were featured on ABC Radio National’s Poetica programme in 2002 http://www.abc.net.au/…/progr…/poetica/leong-nok-tha/3495148 . In the programme Willy also recounted his extraordinary life, including his Jewish father’s narrow escape from Nazi Germany and his difficult experience growing up in his family’s adopted country, England.
Willy will be greatly missed. Our deepest condolences go to Rowan and his family.

CRE Terendak 1960-63
I can't ever remember us meeting,  but I was in the Royal Engineers, Warrant Officer - Superintendant Clerk of CRE Malacca from Dec 1960 to Nov 63.   Our office was up on the embankment just above the sentry box where you entered Terendak Camp.
My wife and I had a most unusual experience seeing a Chinese dragon and I have been requested to record details by an author who is fascinated by the story.    Though we had immediate verbal confirmation of our sighting, I have no written notes or written confirmation from others.   I am prompted to find out,  because today my son out on business came across the son of another Warrant Officer who lived in Terendak at the same time as us, and who mentioned the Dragon sightings.
I was wondering if you or any of your comrades have any memories -  even if only rumours of this event.   If I remember correctly your Unit bulldozed a Chinese Temple in Terendak at the time of this event.   Do you remember this bulldozing?    If so do you have any records of the date it took place?   Thanks

I am trying to find out any information about a former member of the R.E. Who served in Malaya.
His name is Roger Voce.
The lady that is trying to find out his service details does not know his Army number.

Had a stressful drive in Wales with the narrow, twisting, hedge row roads, blind corners and the list goes on, but all is well that ends well, didn’t get a ticket for parking or speeding, that I know off, “High Five” and the car that I was driving was returned in one piece with no dents or scratches, “U beauty”,J however I don’t want to test my luck driving in the UK again!!!!! I Won’t say anymore on that subject.

I had a great time meeting you all and sharing life’s highs and lows, but for all of that, we are all, mates, friends and renewed acquaintances’  I am sure that we will all at some stage in time, meet up again, I sincerely hope so.

I would like to thank you all for sharing time with me, putting me up, shouting me some good Pommy grub, Aussie wine etc, while I was in the UK, it was just great sharing those special moments.

For various reasons this will be my last trip, however, the memories will last forever, and spending time with you all was very special and won’t be forgotten, as long as I don’t get (“Old Timers Disease”) which I enjoyed immensely.

I would love for you all, whenever you are available to make it, to visit my family and myself to “A Land Downunder “so that we can reciprocate your hospitality.

If you think it will be too hot in summer L, don’t worry as we also a have a winter J, well sort off, although it can be nasty, but only for a day or so, but generally around 10 degs to 22 deg C .

May this year was one of the wettest, but it can also be the best, with the changing weather patterns, who can tell?

I know we all spoke of many things during my time with you, and that you asked me to forward photos etc on, because so much happened during my stay in the UK, can I ask you to jog my memory of what you would like me to respond to, so I can forward this information on, as I know it is important to our continued friendship.

I have photos that I have taken which I will forward on ASAP, just need to transfer from one computer to the next.

Hope this finds you all really well and it was my pleasure to meet you all after so many years.

Take Care, Thanks & God’s Blessings to you all

It is with much sadness that I have to inform you all that

Richard (Nobby) Clarke passed
24th March 2014.
Nobby was the driving force behind our reunions at Coventry
and put his heart and soul into getting it going and we all have benefited
from it. He was still thinking of the Sqn on Saturday when he asked his Grandson to make sure he printed off the badges for the reunion and get them to me.
I will close by saying goodbye to a good friend and dedicated
11 Indep Fd Sqn member.
Thank you Nobby, Rest In Peace mate.
Our condolences to Heidi and all the family
Contact me should you want their address

Hi Hank
When I was in Butterworth 59-61 I knew an RE by name of Bill Lee and when I was posted to Malacca in 65, Bill was there, but return to England for D mob not long after, about the same time you left. He was married and he and his family lived at Eden Park, Malacca.
After his D mob I heard that he enlisted in the RAE and was posted to Townsville but I have not been able to find him. Do you think any of the members that were in Butterworth and Malacca remember him and maybe know where he is now.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Sad news indeed
Dear Hank,

It is with much regret I write to inform you of the death of your squadron mate Bernard Waslin, recently as a result of a suspected heart attack. He will be buried tomorrow near Yarrawonga on the Victoria/ NSW border. Unfortunately, Tungamah , being a very small town, will not see a significant number of people there to celebrate his life. The fact that nothing was published will further reduce the likelihood of a state funeral capacity filled church. But should anybody feel inclined to write a letter of condolence to his wife Janet, contact Hank for the address.

From
Len SherrottMany thanks Len

Welcome
Bruce Harper 1967-68
Yes, I'm still in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. I have a Thai partner and we both do some teaching here.  We've just just had our 5th (I think) rememberance service at the main city park.  It started with just a few expats in a corner of the park where there is a small monument for POWs that were kept here by the Japs and died.  An ex sapper, (lifer) Bob Longridge, used to organise it but, now, it's been taken over by the Thais and turned into a major local event, but slightly diminishing its original purpose. Every year, the expats present a bouquet to the surviving descendants of a Thai woman who secretly handed food to POWs.
There are quite a few ex 'Op Crown' guys who travel here for the occasion and also visit the the airfield they built (at Kok Te Lat, where I also served).  They do a little ceremony at the field for the sappers who died there in the 60s.

OCTOBER 2012

Hi All

I recently placed a page with reference to a Lapel Badge available for purchase and found that maybe 2 or 3 responded, from the website. From that response I was ready to forget the idea. A couple of days ago Richard Clarke decided to send out emails to many of you about the badge, well this has stirred many of you into action and I have had over 20 emails requesting a badge.

I’m sorry to say that this proves just how few of you check the website on a regular basis. It also happens with reunion information on the site and later when someone hears that they have missed an item I get the response (we didn’t know) no one told me about it.

Please try to check at least once a month for information you may otherwise miss out on. It really would make our lives a lot simpler guys.

Keep me informed about change of email addresses phone numbers etc.

It would be great to maybe get some old photos of tony.  He is now 69 and has no photos of his Military days, just fond memories.
